Place entries are for any location that plays a role in your research — a town, a county, a specific building, a farm, a cemetery, a parish. If a place mattered to the people and stories you’re documenting, it deserves its own entry.
Create a new place #
In your WordPress admin menu under ChroniclePress, click Places, then click Add New Place.
Type the place’s name in the Add title field at the top. Use the name as it was known historically; you can record its modern name separately in the fields below. For example, you might title the entry King’s County, Ireland and note its modern name as County Offaly.
The main content area #
The content editor below the title is where you can write about this place: its history, significance, what happened there, or how it connects to your research. This is optional but adds a lot of value for your visitors.
Location #
The first panel of fields is Location, which is about where this place is situated geographically.
Location — Use the location picker to set this place within the location hierarchy. For example, a small town would be placed within its county, which sits within its state or province, which sits within its country. See [Using the Location Picker] for a full walkthrough.
Latitude and Longitude — If you know the geographic coordinates of this place, enter them here. These are decimal coordinates (for example, 51.8985 and -8.4756 for Cork, Ireland). You can find coordinates for almost any location using Google Maps — right-click on the map and the coordinates will appear at the top of the menu.
Address — If this place has a modern street address (useful for buildings, cemeteries, or landmarks that still exist), record it here.
History & Names #
Date Established — When was this place founded, incorporated, or first recorded? As with dates on person entries, any format works — 1789, circa 1820s, pre-1700.
Date Dissolved — If the place no longer exists in its original form (was renamed, absorbed into another jurisdiction, or destroyed), record that date here.
Modern Name — If the place is known by a different name today, enter it here. This helps visitors who might be searching by the current name find the historical entry.
Featured Image #
Add a featured image if you have one — a historical photograph, a map excerpt, or a current photograph of the location works well.
Saving your work #
Click Publish to make the entry live, or Save Draft to continue later. Once saved, you can connect this place to related people and sources using the Connections panel.
